Nanded Education Society

Nanded Education Society

A society built on education.

Nanded Education Society founded People's College in 1950 and continues to guide it — with a belief in democratic, decentralised and participative management.

About NES

The Society behind the college.

Nanded Education Society (NES) was created to bring education within reach of the people of the Marathwada region. In 1950 it founded People's College — the first college in Marathwada — and it has supported the college's growth ever since.

The Society's work is guided by the idea that education is a public responsibility. Its institutions are run through a democratic structure: a General Body, a Governing Council and the College Development Committee, with teachers represented at every level.

Decentralisation and participation are the twin watchwords of the Society. The Principal is empowered to take academic and physical initiatives, and the Governing Council follows a deliberate policy of non-interference in the day-to-day running of the college.

Our source of inspiration

Swami Ramanand Teerth.

People's College exists because of Poojya Swami Ramanand Teerth — ascetic, scholar, leader of the Hyderabad Liberation Movement and Member of Parliament for the first two terms of independent India (1952–1962).

He believed that freedom without education would be incomplete. The college was his answer: an institution where young people would be taught to serve the poor, the suppressed and the exploited, and to carry 'the heart of the poor' in every walk of life.

That idea was written into the college's founding purpose on 26 June 1950, and it is still read in the vision and mission the college follows today.

Our story

People's College, as its name shows, will try to cultivate tendencies of the service of the people among the students who will receive instructions here. They will carry with them the heart of the poor in all their activities as the citizens of free India.

Swami Ramanand Teerth, inaugural address, 26 June 1950
